Bicycle Growth
In 2000, world bicycle production climbed to 101 million, more than double the 41 million cars produced that same year. Key indicators such as population growth, increasing oil and gas prices, expanding traffic jams, pollution levels and global warming all point to a need for continued growth; more bicycles for more people in more places.
Consider that using one gallon of gas unleashes approximately 22 lbs of carbon dioxide into the air – a leading contributor to global warming. Figure in a daily consumption rate upwards of 400 million gallons a day – that’s just the United States – and the impact seems staggering. If just 1.5 of every 100 trips was taken with a bicycle instead of a car, the US would save an entire day’s worth of gasoline (Sustainability Initiative, Auburn University).
The Mundo debuts at a time when the movement to increase bicycle usage is gathering speed and recognition. Yuba’s goals fall in line with programs already being implemented by international organizations such as:
