Mundos Green-up “Outside Lands Art and Music Festival”

Posted in yuba blogroll on August 6th, 2010 by steve_bode – Be the first to comment

Utility, Mobility, Community … Rock Out!

This year, Yuba Bicycles is a sponsor of the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival taking place on August 14 and 15.  Music lovers from all over will flock to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco to hear music from over a dozen bands on multiple stages.

Yuba Bicycles will enable Outside Lands to extend their sustainability mission and environmental commitment by proving Mundos for the Festival to use hauling things around, shuttling performers and their gear and moving garbage and recyclables instead of using trucks or golf carts.

Mike’s Bikes will also be demonstrating Yuba products at Eco Lands, an area within the Festival.  Eco Lands will be located at Speedway Meadow where just last weekend the Bicycle Music Festival used its Pedal-Powered Stage to rock the crowd.  Eco Lands’ will have a a music stage powered entirely by solar energy.

Eco Lands‘ vision is that every single person attending Outside Lands will participate in decreasing the carbon footprint of the festival by checking out the hottest live acts featured on the solar-powered Panhandle Stage, choosing refillable water bottles over plastic ones, recycling and composting their waste, biking to the festival or picking up local food from our farmers’ market and restaurants.

The Go-Getter is one of the most important accessory used in combination with the Mundo Cargo Bike. See what you can carry with it, how to install it, see the divider for small items.

Little feet, keep them safe!

Wheel Covers on the Yuba MundoThe Yuba Mundo is now one of the most popular bicycle for carrying passengers including kids. One or multiple kids can be carried on the Mundo rear platform using the Soft Spot padded seat, the Hold-On safety bar and the Running Boards for feet support. However little feet next to moving wheels are exposed to being caught into the spokes.
At our Sausalito workshop we have designed, a simple lightweight and affordable solution for you to install on your Mundo when carrying kids. We call them the “Wheel Skirts”. The Wheel Skirts are made out of a coroplast, the material can be found at most hardware store and the cost for a coroplast sheet is fairly limited. The Wheel Skirts are easy to install on the Mundo, with zip ties and a few bolts. It is also possible to ask for them when ordering a bike from Yuba.

Hold-Ons: Two Local Youths Test the Mundo Stoker Bars

Hold-Ons

The “Hold-Ons” are the most fun accessory for the Mundo.  These stoker bars give your passenger something to hold onto while they ride around on the back of your  Mundo.  The Hold-Ons attach to the 31.8 mm seat post of the Mundo and hold standard 25.4 mm bars.  They are available from your local Yuba Dealer or on-line for $49.00.  Dealers like the kit, too.  “I can get the stem, bar and grips from my regular suppliers, but the fact that Yuba cuts the bars and provides all the pieces is much more convenient.  And, at $49.00, its a deal for the customer, too.”, says Joe Doebele from Joe Bike in Portland.

The two youths in this video are extraordinary young mountain bikers here in Marin.  They ride some rad bikes, but today they stopped by to give the Mundo a test spin.

The Bicycle Works in Marin County Selling More Electric Mundos

Posted in yuba blogroll, yuba shops on June 30th, 2010 by steve_bode – Be the first to comment

The Bicycle Works is Marin County’s first non-profit bicycle co-op.  Directors Jelani Bertoni and Spokey Godfrey, have launched this project in San Anselmo to inspire people to live more active, sustainable lives.  This amazing do-it-yourself bicycle workshop offers the community a place for people to get bicycle knowledge and skills so that everyone can use a bike for their everyday transportation.  They have a passion for getting people out of their cars and on their bikes.  Part of that passion is their realization that many more people will get out of their cars if they can have an electric-assist bike.  The Bicycle Works is a laboratory for electric bike testing and development.  If you stop by their shop in San Anselmo they would be happy to show you their electric Mundo.  Come see what an electric Mundo can do for you!

Letter from a New Customer

Posted in yuba blogroll on June 16th, 2010 by steve_bode – 1 Comment

We get lots of emails about people buying a Mundo, but Johan’s letter was so much fun to read, we had to share it with everyone.

Hi,

The good.  Got up this morning with the feeling that lugging a cart behind my bike is no longer going to work.  Need something better. Went to my local bike shop and found nothing useful around there but for the suggestion to “go check the internet”.  The better.  Ze Yuba.  You bet.  Wonder if Yuba is short for something like Uhaula. The best.  Well, your site is good, dealer locator & everything.  So lucky me, you have a dealer not 20 minutes from here (by bus, that is since I don’t own a car, thus the search for a cargo bike).  I pay a visit to the dealer, have a good look at the live animal and order it there & then (you’ll like that part) then rush back to the bus-stop (if I catch the return ride within 2 hours, its free).  Now the story gets funny.  Rushing buswards past a parking lot I notice a camper just catching fire, must have been the heat. I quickly get a fire extinguisher from some driver and kill the fire before it really takes hold.  Basically, save the day.  In short, if not for your bikes, I would not have been around just when it mattered and the whole lot might have gone up in flames.

So why no more green Mundos? I’m in the process of starting my own business. Already have an excellent name for it “Johan, the Green Handyman”. And then it turns out my future mighty workhorse can have any color I want…but green.  Sure you should not have called it the Model-T?  Anyhow, before you get all worried now, I ordered the color orange.  I’ll build a toolcarriertrunkiekindathing next.  In green.  Carrot-leaf-green. Problem solved.  Not my fault if afterwards the thing looks a bit like a carrot – Carrot-leaf-green.  You have been warned.

A few words about myself.  I’m a High-Functioning Autistic (aka Aspergers).  It’s not contagious and it does not hurt, thank you. It is still very much misunderstood.  Combines intelligence with socially clumsy and tends towards telling loonngg stories loonnngg after everyone falls asleep (you might have noticed that).  I’m also a certified energy consultant, meaning in this country I can consult people on making homes more energy-efficient, then 40% of my fee is tax-refunded.  I live in a 1930′s garage that i’m rebuilding into a zero-energy house/workshop (‘used up’ a bike/cart on that).  My kind of autism does not like to drive cars because I’m bad with surprises & split-second stuff.  I walk, I bike, I bus & train, all but drive a car. Ah, before I forget, I’m an engineer, a carpenter, a plumber and an electrician too, with all the paperwork to prove it.

So yes, got the brains, the skills, the green motivation, even the paperwork to start my own business “Johan, the Green Handyman” but lugging a cart behind my bike really was not going to work.

Meaning your Yuba is going to make a Mundo of a difference.

PS.  I like the way you built this bike for Africa. It’s really the kind of stuff they need.  Altho on 2nd thought the World in general & the Western world in specific need it even more – If we all want to live rather than die from our own pollution that is.
